About Blackjack
Blackjack is a comparing game against the dealer, not against other players. You are dealt two cards, the dealer shows one, and you decide whether to draw more. The aim is a total closer to twenty-one than the dealer's without going over it; go over and the hand is lost immediately, whatever the dealer then does.
Blackjack is unusual among casino games in that your decisions genuinely change the house edge. Standing on a hand you would otherwise bust, splitting a pair, doubling in the right spot — these are not superstitions, they are choices with measurably different expected outcomes, and the published rules of each table let you work out which is which. What decisions cannot do is remove the edge. Played perfectly, the house still keeps a margin; played casually, it keeps considerably more.
The rule variations matter more than the table's appearance. Whether the dealer stands or draws on a soft seventeen, whether blackjack pays three to two or six to five, whether surrender is offered and whether you may double after splitting all shift the arithmetic. Every table publishes its own rule set before you sit down. Card counting, incidentally, does not transfer online: computer-dealt games reshuffle every hand, and live tables use shoes and shuffle procedures designed with that in mind.
Common questions
It has a skill component, which is rare in a casino game — your decisions change the expected result. It remains a game with a built-in house advantage that no decision removes, so it is still gambling and still costs money over time.
It is the price the table pays for a two-card twenty-one. A table paying 6 to 5 instead returns less for the same hand, which measurably increases the house edge. The rule is published on every table.
The cards. A computer-dealt table draws from a random number generator and reshuffles each hand; a live table is a physical shoe dealt by a person in a studio and streamed to you. The rules and the payouts are published for both.
It is a separate side bet on the dealer holding blackjack, not protection. It has its own odds, and over time it carries a higher house edge than the main game.
Nothing on this page is advice on how to win, and no game described here can be influenced, predicted or beaten over time. Every game is built to return less than it takes. Play with money you can afford to lose, and set your limits before you start rather than after.

Every account at MGE Digital opens with a deposit limit, a loss limit and a session time limit that you set yourself during registration. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one is held for 24 hours and must then be confirmed by you.
Online gambling is entertainment that costs money, not a way to make it. If it stops being entertainment, BetGuard self-exclusion closes your account across every operator in the Ontario market, and Responsible Gaming explains every other control available to you.
